Say hello to my current favorite smoothie flavor -> gingerbread 🙂

As we move into December, we keep seeing gingerbread treats all around! From gingerbread lattes at Starbucks to gingerbread cookies on Instagram, it’s everywhere! It’s that special time of the year where spices like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg come together to create wonderfully nostalgic flavors that will forever remind us of the holidays.

So, a gingerbread smoothie was bound to happen in our smoothie-loving household! Not only because it’s seasonal, but also because it’s delicious and a great way to incorporate these healing and warming spices into foods during the colder months of the year.

As always, my main focus when creating a recipe is to make it nutritious and balanced with fiber, protein, and healthy fats. That’s why I included frozen zucchini, hemp hearts, flax seeds, peanut butter, and coconut milk into this smoothie. Blackstrap molasses is what gives this smoothie its beautiful golden hue and delightful gingerbread taste, besides the lovely spices. Blackstrap molasses is one of my favorite sweeteners that’s rich in minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and selenium and vitamins like B6. It should be used in small amounts though because, albeit natural, it still is a sweetener and will raise blood sugar levels. The good thing is that it has a glycemic load lower than refined sugar, so it won’t affect blood sugar as much as white sugar does.

I topped this delicious smoothie with some of my chocolate gingerbread granola for some extra holiday fun and an added crunch. Can’t wait to see you trying it and hearing your thoughts. If you get a chance to snap photos, be sure to share them with me on Instagram and Facebook @nutriholist #nutriholist, so I can share them on my page. Enjoy!
